Garachico is nowadays one of the most important historical centers of the Canary Islands.

Thanks to the prosperous historical-artistic heritage collected from the past and the special care that has been taken in its conservation, it was awarded, in 1980, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts. The respect shown for this legacy has made it possible for Garachico to present itself to us as a valuable example of art in the Canary Islands today, particularly in urban planning and traditional archipelago architecture. For this reason, the urban structure of the municipal capital was declared by the Canary Islands Government, in February 1994, a Site of Cultural Interest with the category of Historic Complex.
